The Appraisal Process

Contact me

Appraiser, auctioneer and liquidator of antiques and personal property. Offering appraisal, consulting and estate liquidation services for the Philadelphia and Harrisburg, PA areas..

The Appraisal Process:

Resources:
I have access to reference resources, from books to periodicals to online subscription information services, that provide up-to-date reports from national and international auction houses. I also have contact with the members of the International Society of Appraisers, who are knowledgeable, experienced and generous sources of information and advice.

Inspection: Property is examined by the appraiser for condition, characteristics, and dimensions. If the item cannot be inspected due to loss, theft, or damage, the appraiser will make critical assumptions based on interviews with the owner. Prior photographs and/or history of origin will be useful in the evaluation.

Research: Conclusions are based on comparable sales analysis. Research time includes the time taken to identify marks, verify dates, locate comparable sales data, investigate retail markets, and consult experts, if necessary.

The Report: A complete appraisal report provides a clear explanation of  the type of value being sought and how the appraisal is to be used, methodology and resources relied upon, date and location of the inspection, effective date of the value, statement that the appraiser has no financial interest in the property, and the appraiser's signature. The body of the appraisal contains an accurate description of each item of property in the report, with the value conclusions. The addendum contains the appraiser's qualifications to perform the appraisal.
